Spent a few hours on it. The guy who rebuilt the carb returned it to him sans base gasket... took care of that and it will crank over but not stay running for more than 1/2 sec or so. It's an olds 307 but it has the fully electronic timing control inside the HEI distributor. no vacuum or mechanical advance...

It will crank completely free of load for a few seconds, then (time to build up oil pressure?) it cranks "normally", catches, runs and dies.

I am pretty well convinced it's the ignition module, some have said timing chain. I ran out of time and couldn't get my timing light to work, and I never got a compression test done. It's really odd how it cranks free for a bit. Going to link to the facebook video, not sure if it will work right here. Anyone know a good video host, or can I upload a video straight into Kinja from a potato phone? I could probably dropbox it too.

The guy has Parkinsons and can't work on it himself anymore, trying to do a guy a favor. At least it's getting gas now.

It's out of time. Bring #1 cylinder to the top on the compression stroke, then check to see if the distributor rotor is pointing at the #1 plug wire terminal.

If it were out of position, why does it then start (and sound smooth)?

Unfortunately I'm not going to see the car for a bit. He's going to start with the ignition module and if that doesn't work he'll save it for another day.

I've had a lot of people saying timing chain or ign module, several who said they had a bad module doing the exact same thing. So we are going for the module first...

Thanks for the reply!

Because it is probably off only a tooth or two, I'd bet that if you could rev it a bit it would not be smooth. I suggested this because it is a free check that I would do before spending any money on things that may not be needed. That being said, it could very well be the ignition module if it controls the timing as well. I do not know about those modules, but I have been able to find testing procedures online for most Ford modules, maybe they are available for that car too?

P.S. I learned an expensive ($1000 worth of sensors, modules, etc.) lesson years ago about just throwing parts at a car. It turned out that the distributor was off 2 teeth which was severely messing with the electronic controls and ECU. Therefore I learned to "check all the simple stuff first" as a mechanic friend always tried to teach me.

I completely agree, I always advise against 'throwing parts at it'. I used to work a parts counter and could tell when a part was going to be returned...

I am not close to the car and the guy has parkinsons so can't quite work on it himself anymore. I spent a few hours working on it and got this far after installing the missing carb base gasket... :(

We are down to educated guessing until I can get back there to do a compression check and more timing diagnostics. The more I messed with it the more convinced I am that it's not timing chain related. That's next though if the ign module doesn't work.

Bummed because when I was out there I couldn't get my timing light to work and ran out of time.

Thumbup for helping the guy, people like you do make a difference in others lives when you do things like this.

Something I thought about after listening to it once more. It is possible that it may have some valves that are slightly sticking, which could be the reason it spins over freely at first if the valves are sticking open a bit.
